Why Does My Tongue Hurt?

It’s not a canker sore or a new piercing – a tender feeling tongue with a burning sensation and a red color, swollen with a smooth appearance indicates glossitis – inflammation of the tongue. The causes of an inflamed tongue may stem from local factors like contact with irritants – tobacco, alcohol, spices, hot food and liquids. Dental conditions can also contribute to an inflamed tongue, such as chipped or rough tooth surfaces. Viral infections like herpes simplex, canker sores and even allergic reactions – food, toothpaste, mouthwash – can all contribute to glossitis as well!

The damage caused by continuous purging is what may ultimately bring a bulimic patient to the dentist. If the erosion is caught early enough and the patient is seeking treatment for the eating disorder, then something as simple as a fluoride rinse may help. But if the damage is severe, the next step may be a more comprehensive treatment, such as placing a crown on each affected tooth. However, if the patient has not sought treatment for the bulimia, any reconstructive efforts may prove ineffective because additional acid will destroy any new restorations.

Dangers of Chewing Ice

It may just be frozen water, but chewing ice can be very hard on your teeth. People who chew ice end up with a lot of fracture lines in their teeth. These slight cracks make teeth painfully sensitive to cold and biting pressure. Sometimes a whole piece of tooth will break off and the only way to save the tooth may be to place a crown. If the fracture lines are deep enough to threaten the tooth nerve, that can mean a root canal or an extraction. In addition chewing ice will wear off the enamel on your teeth and over the long term put them at more risk to decay. Some people even end up with serious bite problems. So stop chewing ... it's better to break the ice habit!

Dental Implants: A Better Way of Life

Whether you have lost one tooth or many, dental implants have tremendous esthetic benefits. When you lose teeth, ongoing shrinking of the jawbone occurs, making your face look older and shrunken. Implants integrate with natural jawbone and stops this process so your jaw muscles will grow stronger and your face will maintain a more youthful, natural appearance. With your new teeth, you’ll look as good as you deserve to—your friends, family, and members of the opposite sex will notice the difference.

Modern cosmetic restorations like dental implants, crowns, and bridges look and feel just like your own natural teeth. All result in improved appearance and oral health. How? Crowns preserve compromised teeth, and combined with bridges, they prevent teeth from drifting. Implants also prevent drifting and they preserve bone tissue. All three procedures are directly responsible for improved self-confidence ... which will, of course, keep you smiling!

Genetic Dental Traits

A notorious example of a hereditary dental trait is the Hapsburg Jaw, the result of generations of royal intermarriage. Poor Carlos II of Spain had such an extreme prognathism (protruding lower jaw) that he was unable to chew his food. Thankfully for most of us, hereditary dental traits, although common, are not severe and are readily treatable. These include malocclusions (bad bites), gaps, soft tooth enamel, caries (decay), and periodontal diseases.
