Manalapan Dentist Dr. James Courey

knows that if you are suffering from the pain and discomfort of TMJ symptoms, getting the right treatment can be truly life changing. The effects of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) can range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain, but there is a solution. Through correct diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Courey will be able to help you to live painfree again!

Dr. Courey's extensive training as a Prosthodontist gives him the training and insight to know how to diagnose and treat issues involving the jaw, face and bite.

Common Symptoms of TMJ

  • Pain in the jaw, neck, face or teeth
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Clicking or popping noises in the jaw
  • Limited range of motion in the jaw joints
  • Misaligned bite causing worn down teeth
  • Difficulty eating, chewing or talking

When a patient complains about any of these symptoms, we send them to an M.D. first to ensure that their symptoms do not have some other physiological cause. Because of our interest in the overall health and well-being of our clients, we partner closely with other health care providers such as pathologists and radiologist. This allows us to work as a united team in diagnosis and treatment of our patients health issues.

Treatment Options

Designing a customized plastic mouth appliance that interrupts the effects of grinding and clenching to eliminate or reduce muscle pain, while protecting from wearing down the tooth enamel is a common solution for TMJ issues. Once we have ruled out any other more serious health problems and TMJ has been diagnosed as the cause of your symptoms, Dr. Courey will, with his expert prosthodontic training, be able to create the appropriate mouthpiece or orthotic appliance to help reduce your symptoms. Working closely with a qualified radiologist, Dr. Courey will have a dental CAT SCAN taken that will highlight the areas of concern. Then, a custom-made mouthguard can be created that will alleviate any misalignment or pressure points.

More extreme cases of TMJ require repositioning a jaw that is under terrible duress, or that has suffered trauma from an accident. The jaw is the one joint in the body that can't be totally immobilized, but we can use a special appliance to pull the jaw forward and set it in the correct bite position to relieve traumatic stress. In some cases, we have to unload the jaw and then use a second appliance to help reposition the jaw back into a normal functioning position.

Whatever your issue is, Dr. Courey's committment to bringing relief to his patients suffering from the pain of TMJ issues will have you smiling, eating and laughing again free from pain; call our office for a consultation.
